#nomoremermaidtears

2016-2017

This year, SCEA ran our first independent social media campaign, #NoMoreMermaidTears, to empower local young people while raising awareness about plastic pollution. Mermaid tears are another word for nurdles, the microplastic beads released in production of plastic-containing goods.

For this campaign, we enlisted local teen photographers to take pictures of activists acting as mer-models and  displaying posters with fast facts about plastic pollution.  The poster materials were diverted waste donated by Palace Arts and Office Supply downtown, and the mermaid tails were generous donations from Fin Fun Mermaid Tails and Suntail Mermaids.

The hashtag has been reposted by accounts across the world, and has received over 11.5 K likes and views. We're excited to have accessed the online mermaiding community and to have reached such an audience!
